Built in 1912, the Gary Public Library’s Carnegie Library was located east of the apartment district and was a significant structure in the city. Considered the Main library building of the library system, it also faced 5th Avenue. Its prominence in this area helped to define and anchor Gary’s west side, along with Jefferson Park, the landmark water tower (now demolished) and the imposing Knights of Columbus building. The city’s streetcars on 5th Avenue helped to connect and bring apartment dwellers downtown. This library building stood until 1962 when it was demolished.
