Judge Elbert Henry Gary (left) with Calvin Coolidge and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1925. Judge Gary ran the steelmill and was the city's namesake. During the strike, Gary ordered over 30,000 African American workers from the South to replace the striking union workers.
