The First Subdivision ran south about one mile from the mills, accessible by its main street, Broadway, that ran north and south. The town’s president favored expansion further south, in conflict with mill officials who favored an east and west expansion. The first town board extended paving Broadway two miles south of the First Subdivision and by 1910 it was paved an additional two miles. A streetcar franchise was later awarded and helped to further expand Gary’s southern growth.
