Atterbury Rock

In 1943, Camp Atterbury housed 3000 Italian prisoners of war. Atterbury became one of the largest POW camps in the United States, receiving 15,000 soldiers over the three years it was operational. This rock, which sits at the east entrance to Camp Atterbury, was carved by Italian POW Libero Puccini. Under the words he carved an Italian dagger, also known as a stiletto. After the war, Puccini returned to the U.S. and became a citizen.
