Civil War Memorial

This bronze and limestone monument features a sculpture of a Union soldier created by Austrian-born American artist Rudolph Schwarz. It was commissioned and donated by Franklin businessman John Vawter in 1905 and is referred to as the Vawter Memorial. The front of the pedestal bears a relief of an eagle and a portrait of Vawter. Four bronze lions’ heads are positioned around the base and emit water into a semi-circular basin during warm weather season.
