Hoagy's mother Lida Carmichael, shown embraced by her son in this photo, was an accomplished pianist who supplemented the family's income by playing piano at fraternity and sorority parties and at many of the movie theatres in town to accompany the silent movies. Lida shared her love of music with Hoagy and taught him to play piano at a young age.
