Seiberling’s Diamond Plate factory fell on hard times in the mid-1890’s. The gas wells were drying up and the days of free energy were ending at the same time that a nationwide recession curtailed construction and demand for large sheets of plate glass. The factory, which is seen in this photograph from around 1920, was absorbed into a huge plate glass trust, becoming part of Pittsburgh Plate Glass.
